Shopping for the one perfect bed to correct all your sleep woes can feel like a pipe dream until you stumble across the best hybrid mattresses. These beds are ideal for sleepers who can’t seem to get comfortable with a traditional innerspring mattress or bouncy foam bed. Here’s the secret: This mattress type combines the two with an encased coil system and plush materials like memory foam to give you a happy medium that’ll allow you to sleep soundly.

What’s great about these beds is their versatility. You’ll find mattresses that can suit just about any sleep style, from stomach to side-sleeping. And while these are known for being firmer thanks to the sturdy foundation of coils that forms their base, we’ve sprinkled in a few luxe soft mattresses featuring organic cotton, natural latex, and more to fit your needs. We know that beds aren’t a casual impulse purchase, so we combed through all of the best mattress brands on our radar to find the most high-quality picks that are worth the cost—and included some of our favorites on sale too. Here, find the best hybrid mattress to enhance your sleep experience.

The Best Hybrid Mattresses, Overall

Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-firm
  • Height: 12 inches
  • Shipping: Free and includes old mattress and box spring removal
  • Trial: 365 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

Temperature regulating, minimal motion transfer, ideal for those with back pain

Downsides

Doesn’t ship in a box

It’s no wonder our global editorial director and US editor in chief Amy Astley sleeps soundly night after night on this Saatva mattress, which boasts five ergonomic zones for support and layers of soft organic natural latex. She calls out the bed’s pressure-relieving qualities, which are designed to boost comfort around the lumbar area: “My lower back pain disappeared soon after we started sleeping on it—that alone is mattress gold!”

This mattress is well-suited for two (very) different sleepers, too. “My husband is six foot five and often a back sleeper, and I am much smaller and a side sleeper,” Astley says, adding that this bed is great for hot sleepers. “We both sleep warm and appreciate the vented airflow channels, which allow for circulation and breathability.” She also notes that it has a breathable feel thanks to latex’s naturally cooling properties. Plus, she can’t feel any motion transfer throughout the night, which helps her sleep soundly.

“This mattress is just right, especially for a side sleeper like me,” Astley says. “I look forward to getting into bed and it is so cozy and comfy that I don’t care to get out of it in the morning! It has been life-enhancing.”

DreamCloud Premier Hybrid Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Semi-firm
  • Height: 13 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 365 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

Breathable, with an extra layer of body-contouring foam

Downsides

Not sustainably made

We’ve named the Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid our favorite mattress-in-a-box for a few years running, which global visuals director Michael Shome chalks up to the delivery to setup to sleep experience. It conveniently arrives compressed in a compact box, though he does say it requires at least two people to move in place since it’s too heavy for a solo lift. From there, it’s easy to set up since it expands to its full size once unwrapped. Ringing it at just under $900 when it’s on sale (and it does get marked down frequently), this is a great luxury-meets-budget mattress.

In terms of comfort, this bed is second to none for those seeking a firm yet plush feel. “The mattress is moderately firm, but the plush Euro Top adds an extra layer of coziness and comfort,” Shome says. “The DreamCloud Premier King has a super-cozy cashmere top and seven decadent layers of adaptive support.”

Co-sleepers are in for a treat, too, as it has just the right amount of stability that keeps a restless partner from waking you up. Shome already recommended DreamCloud to his parents, who often complain that “transfer movement” is annoying and disturbs their sleep. Aside from the Saatva Latex Hybrid, this is the only other mattress on our list that offers a one-year trial period to help you thoroughly assess the mattress. “Too often mattresses lose their support after consecutive nights of sleep, which makes the trial period quite valuable,” Shome adds.

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-firm
  • Height: 13.5 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

Pressure-relieving, supportive, quick mattress inflation

Downsides

Chemical smell upon unboxing

If you need back support, this medium-firm mattress is a solid option for a new mattress—no pun intended. Contributor Gaby Ulloa is officially a fan after noticing that her sleep improved after just one day. Even though she typically wakes up from back pain when sleeping on a hotel mattress, or even vetted ones like the bed at her mom’s house. “It provides the perfect ‘not too soft, not too firm’ situation and allows me to sink into a deep night’s sleep while still feeling completely supported,” she says. “I wake up feeling refreshed and well-rested each day.”

The motion transfer is top-tier. She doesn’t feel her six foot nine partner move around as she sleeps, and he, too, “agreed the support was ideal.”

Available on Amazon, Ulloa says the shipping and delivery were simple with the bed in a box arriving at her doorstep. The only drawback to this mattress was upon unboxing. She opted for the Helix mattress that’s two inches thicker than its standard mattress, which made it a little harder to move from the box to the bed frame.

“After my friend and I managed to get the mattress out of the box, I removed the plastic wrap carefully (making sure to not cut into the mattress) and then watched in awe at how quickly it expanded into its full shape,” she says. “I noticed a slight chemical smell and decided to stay the night elsewhere. Full disclosure: This was more due to the fact that I still had one night left in my old apartment before I had to turn in the keys rather than the smell itself, which faded fairly quickly.”

Puffy LUX Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-plush
  • Height: 12 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 101 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

Optimal for side sleepers, breathable feel, plush cover

Downsides

Lacks edge support

Calling all side sleepers: Sam Cochran, global features director, notes that this mattress reigns supreme for this sleep position. “I like the idea of being cradled in place by a foam bed, all the more so since my skinny six foot four frame—especially my long neck and spine—enjoy extra support, says Cochran, who wakes up in the same sleeping position as the one in which he dozed off (right side down, hands beneath the head, legs in a slight fetal position.)

Unlike picks in our guide, this is a softer mattress for sleepers who might look for a memory foam mattress that conforms to their bodies. “I love the feeling of sinking into it at night, the way the foam gives beneath my body,” Cochran says, adding that it’s so soft that it feels like he’s sleeping on whipped peaks of meringue. “It really feels like the end of the day, an easy transition into relaxation mode and a nice wind down to REM cycle.” Extra perk: He doesn’t feel a thing when his restless partner tosses and turns at night.

“I know it’s a hybrid model, with a coil base topped by traditional memory foam. But the overwhelming sensation is one of gently sinking into the surface,” he adds of this bed’s cushioning. “I was too comfortable to really consider where one layer ended and the next began.” A couple of things he notes, however, are that the rounded topper shape offers less edge support, and there’s a slight synthetic odor after unpacking the bed.

The Company Store Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Luxury firm
  • Height: 13 inches
  • Shipping: Free
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 15 years

Upsides

Floral design, hand-tufted, crafted with organic materials

Downsides

Thick design might require deep-pocket sheets

“No one actually cares about the way a mattress looks when it’s sheathed in a fitted sheet, but the design really stands out on this bed,” says associate commerce director Lori Keong of this surprisingly stylish bed, which came out in late 2023 and is the only botanical pattern The Company Store has ever released. “The exterior has a soft quilted texture of cashmere, silk, and wool and features a floral design that runs the length of the bed, with hand-tufted rosettes filling the indentations on the mattress. Lots of places talk the talk when it comes to offering a premium mattress, but the craftsmanship on this one really justifies the steep near-$3,000 price point.”

Thanks to the breathable organic materials, Keong (who oscillates between being too hot and too cold) says the temperature regulation is great through the seasons. Also as a side and stomach sleeper, she doesn’t love mattresses that are too firm. This one offers up a “bit of squishiness” to keep her comfortable in either sleep position.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to shop for deep-pocket sheets, as this mattress is 13 inches tall and can be challenging to stretch fitted bedding on it—especially if you have extras like a mattress topper. For something this plush, we recommend the Buffy Belgian linen set, which is made to be extra roomy.

Coyuchi Natural REM Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness rating: Medium-firm
  • Height: 11 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 25 warranty

Upsides

Great for combination sleepers, plush top layer, minimal motion transfer

Downsides

Its height isn’t as tall as some mattresses in this list, so it might be less ideal for sleepers looking for a grand bed for their room

For senior commerce editor Nashia Baker, Coyuchi’s Natural Rem hybrid bed hits all the right notes for a peaceful slumber—so much so that she never would have guessed that it’s the AD-favorite bedding brand’s first-ever mattress. “It has the quality of a bed from a legacy brand,” she says. “The hand-tufted construction is incredibly compact considering it’s filled with coils and layers upon layers of organic, soft materials like wool and latex.”

While she has always slept on beds with a box spring, Baker noticed how supported she feels as a combination sleeper—whether she is resting on her side, stomach, or any sleep position for that matter. “I know that mattresses-in-a-box can get a bad rap for being too soft and contouring deeply to the point of feeling like you’re sinking,” she adds. “This bed has just enough support from the coils to maintain its shape—I have a strong feeling it will last for years to come.”

In comparison to her old mattress, which was extra-firm to the point of being uncomfortable, this one has a soft cover and inner layers that give her support around her neck and shoulders. Baker recommends this mattress for anyone who values sustainable materials like organic latex, cotton, and wool padding.

Layla Hybrid Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-firm and medium-soft sides
  • Height: 13 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 120 nights
  • Warranty: 10 years

Upsides

Flippable with a soft and firm side, cradling feel, motion control

Downsides

Not customizable to specific sleep needs, aside from the soft and firm sides

Can’t decide if you’re a medium-firm or medium-soft sleeper? You won’t have to choose when you shop Layla Sleep. It breathes new life into a “hybrid” bed with a flippable design with two firmness levels: It’s soft on one side and firm on the other. Contributor Cheryl Dearborne uses the firm side and says it supports her properly while still “providing a soft cradle.” This is the layer order on the firm side: cool and supportive copper-gel memory foam, airflow support foam with the brand’s Surface Modification Technology, individually wrapped coil system for even more motion control, another layer of airflow support foam, and a layer of copper-gel memory foam. If you’re still not convinced, Dearborne says this dreamy bed left her “sleeping better than I ever have before. My sleep is more regulated.”

Parachute Eco Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-firm
  • Height: 12 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 10 years

Upsides

Made of natural, quality materials like organic cotton, ample give

Downsides

Short sleep trial

Parachute is one of the best organic bedding brands out there, so naturally we had to try out the brand’s mattress. Made of premium, eco-friendly materials, this bed includes six layers of Pure New Zealand wool, 100% organic cotton, and tempered steel (with five times the pocketed coils of a standard mattress). The result? A Goldilocks mattress of your dreams. This intentionally made mattress is a trifecta of must-haves: firm, not too soft, and has good motion isolation. Parachute’s signature piece even convinced contributor Kristen Flanagan to become a firm mattress faithful. “There is plenty of give, but you don’t sink into it or leave an imprint. My back feels very supported. The hand-tufting makes the top soft but not too mushy,” Flanagan says. “I imagine if you’re used to a super cushiony mattress, you might not like this one at first, but Parachute has converted me into a medium-firm mattress person.”

Purple RestorePremier Hybrid

Specs

  • Brand firmness rating: Plush
  • Height: N/A
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 10 years

Upsides

Molds to pressure points, buoyant, soft feel

Downsides

Pricey

Purple’s Restore Premier is packed with comforting foam and coils. And its three layers work well for an understated, low-sitting bed frame. A core layer is the brand’s own proprietary GelFlex Grid, aimed to strike a soft and supportive balance, molding to your pressure points. “The first time I sat on it, I was shocked at how squishy it felt,” attests contributor Shoko Wanger. “My toddler son even hopped on with me and immediately said, ‘Bouncy!’” When she did lay down, she was surprised that the mattress didn’t sink in, but “felt buoyant.” She recommends this bed for someone who likes a firmer mattress, noting “that aforementioned combo of cushiness and extra support is almost addictive.”

How We Tested the Best Hybrid Mattresses

For our AD guides, we test all of the mattress brands by giving them a whirl in our own homes. That means tracking everything from shipping to unboxing to situating it in our bedrooms. Then there is the scrupulous note-taking of how easy it is to fall (and stay) asleep. Aside from these factors, we get into the specifics to truly zero in on what sets mattresses apart within the industry.

Comfort: While comfort can be subjective, our editors and contributors kept in mind mattress qualities such as breathability, support, and softness/firmness for the best sleep. Our team notes that organic materials like latex and cotton offer the most breathability, while extras like gel-infused layers add a level of cooling comfort to catch some extra z’s. Since all of the mattresses in this list are hybrid, they include encased coils. Last but not least, we looked for options that include plenty of memory foam and even pillow-top covers to give a soft-to-the-touch feel without feeling like you’re sinking into quicksand.

Pressure relief: If you’re looking for a mattress that can help keep aches at bay, hybrid beds are helpful because of their supportive coils. Many are also designed with targeted pressure relief points for areas that support the shoulders and spine. Some of our picks have several layers of coils to give added support to mitigate annoying neck and back pains.

Motion isolation: Our editors were mindful of motion isolation during testing. Noting if they could feel their partner getting in and out of bed as they slept. Our team noticed that beds with several layers of dense foam did the best at keeping motion isolation to a minimum.

Edge support: If you like to live (and sleep) on the edge, this factor is especially important. Our testers kept edge support in mind when trying out these mattresses to ensure they didn’t feel like they were slipping off the bed.

What to Look for in the Best Hybrid Mattresses

To make sure you have the best shopping experience, take note of the following factors.

Durability: Since hybrid mattresses are made of foam and coils, they are more durable than others on the market. However, we recommend a balance between steel coils and sturdy, sustainable materials like organic latex and cotton that are designed to last for years.

Price: Most hybrid mattresses fall between $800 and $3,000. While some luxury mattresses will be more expensive, the higher price points also come with high-end features like pillow-top covers. Many brands host mattress sales on the regular. Plus, you can shop some of these mattresses on Amazon at a discount.

Warranty: Since beds are usually a big-ticket purchase, it’s best to look for extensive warranties so you know you’re getting your money’s worth. Many industry-leading brands start at 10-year warranties, while some, like Saatva and DreamCloud, include lifetime warranties. Keep an eye out for sleep trials. Many brands on this list offer at least a 100-night trial to get you acquainted with the mattress without feeling like you have to commit right away.
